The Ashanti-style Stool is a premium, sculptural seating solution that combines West African craftsmanship with the symbolic artistry of Southeast Asia. Hand-carved from solid teak wood (Tectona grandis), the design is anchored by the Gunungan (Kayon) — the iconic tapered form from Javanese wayang theatre — serving as both a visual centerpiece and a functional handle.
In Javanese culture, the Gunungan represents the cosmic mountain and the Tree of Life (Kalpataru), symbolising creation, resilience, and renewal. Traditionally marking the opening and closing of wayang performances, it signifies balance, transition, and continuity — qualities that translate seamlessly into a functional object designed for daily use, whether in commercial hospitality, office, or retail environments.
The ergonomically shaped handle provides a comfortable grip, while the flowing form references volcanic landscapes and arboreal motifs common in Southeast Asian design. Hand-carved reliefs at the core of the stool feature traditional Javanese symbols, representing protection, harmony, and continuity — motifs with enduring cross-cultural relevance, often seen on museum-quality artifacts worldwide.
Each stool is individually crafted by a master Javanese artisan, known as an ukir, over the course of a week. This artisanal process ensures each piece is unique, reflecting Wabi-Sabi principles of imperfection and human touch. Constructed from sustainably sourced teak prized for its strength, durability, and natural moisture resistance, the stool features a sculptural base, a smoothly contoured seat, and intricate Javanese iconography. With durability in mind, this stool is robust, allowing it to be stored outside year round. Teak naturally weathers over time and the wood will change in appearance to a beautiful silvery grey patina.
If left untreated, teak wood will naturally weather into a sophisticated silver grey patina. All this stool needs is an occasional wash with soap and water to stay in top condition.
